Tennis update

With winter break upon us and the cold weather on it's way we will not be having any more open courts until the official start to the season. The season will officially begin either on Feb. 20 or 21. Please keep checking the blog as I will post any winter time tennis activities at the local Y in Stafford or Mary Washington University. Enjoy your winter break and see you in February!!

Tennis this Weekend! Hurry deadline Wednesday!!

The following announcement is from Bob Calloway, head of the Y tennis center:

The Y in Stafford is having an open high school tournament this weekend (12/16-18) starting at 4:00 on Friday. Fees: Y members $26 and non members $36.Registration: Call the tennis desk before 3:00 pm Wed. 12/14. (371-9622, ext 1044)Two matches guaranteed; no more than 2 matches in one day,

Format: 10 game set (tie break at 9-9) until the finals which will be a two out of three game match with the USTA 10 pt. tie break for the 3rd set

Open Courts on Dec. 14

Looks like the weather will cooperate for us this week!! We will meet at the courts from 3:15-4:30 on Dec. 14. Make sure your completed physical form is on file with Mr. Lowman.

Open Courts on Dec. 7 Cancelled

Due to the rain predicted there will be no open tennis on Dec. 7. We will try again on Dec. 14 weather permitting!

Great weather for the end of November!!

Thanks to Cole, Aaron, Dylan, Austin and Patrick who took advantage of today's weather to hit the ball around!! We will try for next Wednesday, Dec. 7 from 3:15-4:30, weather cooperating of course!!

Open Courts to resume after Thanksgiving

If the weather cooperates we will try to have open courts on the following Wednesdays: Nov. 30, Dec. 7 and Dec. 14. This is a change from the Tuesday dates due to meetings I have recently been included in. The times will be from 3:15 - 4:30 and obviously the weather will determine if we are able to play or not. If it is below 45 degrees we will not play and if there is precipitation in the area that will cancel open court time as well. Remember you must have a completed physical form on file with Mr. Lowman to participate. I will try to make an announcement if possible but use your best judgment. Hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Open Courts on Tuesday's

Great turnout yesterday and great weather!!! Thanks to Marcus, Cole, Aaron, Austin and Hunter for participating in yesterday's workout! Remember we will meet again next Tuesday from 4:00-5:30 if you are able to make it. If you know of anyone who may be interested invite them out to give it a try and see if Tennis is a game they might enjoy. Make sure your physical forms are turned in!!!

Additional Fall Tennis opportunity

I apologize I did not make it last Tuesday to the open practice and hope to be there next week on Oct. 18. I have additional information that was shared with me about Fall Camps being help at the University of Mary Washington. Open Courts on Tuesday's this month!

If you want to get out and hit the ball around this month stop by the Courtland Courts from 4:00-5:30 on Oct. 11, Oct. 18 and Oct. 25. You must have a physical form on file with Mr. Lowman in order to participate!!!

Fall Tennis opportunity

With the new VHSL rules in place we are able to have practices throughout the school year. In order to be eligible to participate in off season workouts you must have a physical on file with Mr. Lowman. I will begin to contact you to let you know when we will begin having off season practices. They will not begin until after labor day and are not mandatory. This will be an opportunity to get out and work on your game to prepare for the upcoming season. Listen to the school announcements or check the blog to get more information on dates and times. Andrew competes at Regionals

Andrew competed in the Regional singles tournament on May 31. He played Powhatan's District Champion and lost in a three hour long, three set match 6-2 5-7 6-2 in the brutal heat at Jamestown High School. He played extremely well considering the overwelming heat that eventually postponed the rest of the matches.

Reminder tonight (June 1) is the Awards Banquet at 6:00 pm.

Andrew will play in the Regional Singles Tournament on May 31 and June 1

Wed, June 1 - Singels Final @ 9 am - Jamestown HS

He will play the Southside District #1 player in the first round
If he wins he will play the winner of the Bay Rivers #1/Southside #3 in the Semis.

Andrew falls in District Final

Andrew played well but ran up against a backboard from Eastern View. Everything Andrew could throw at him would come back. The final score was 6-1 6-1. Despite the loss Andrew qualifies for the Regional tournament!! More information to follow. Practice for Andrew and Scott will continue through next week. Congrats Andrew!!!

Andrew and Scott fall in the Semi Finals

Andrew and Scott defeated Caroline 10-1 in th quarter finals of the doubles tournament at the University of Mary Washington.

In the Semi Finals they ran up against the #1 doubles team from the season and came up a bit short. Playing a tight first set they fell 7-5 and lost some steam and lost the second set. The final was 7-5 6-0.

Andrew advances to District Finals!!!

Andrew won both his matches in the District Singles tournament at the University of Mary Washington on May 16.

He defeated King George 10 - 0 in the quarter-finals.

In the Semi Finals knocked off the #1 seed from Chancellor in the tournament 7-5 3-6 6-3.

He will play in the finals on Wednesday, May 18. He played awesome tennis!!

Way to go Andrew!!

Andrew and Scott vs Caroline if we win we will play the winner of JM and the play in match which will most likely be JM.

Wednesday Finals:

If we finish Monday or Tuesday without a loss we will be in the finals Wednesday.

May 16: Andrew will compete at the University of Mary Washington in the Singles tournament. Start time is 3:30. Andrew will start playing some time around 5:00. Come out and cheer him on if you are able!

May 17: Andrew and Scott will compete at the University of Mary Washington in the Doubles tournament. Start time is 3:30. They will start playing some time around 5:00. Come out and cheer them on if you are able!

May 18: If either of them win they will play in the finals at 3:30. This also would most likely mean they would qualify for the Regional Tournament in Jamestown.

Cougars lose to Cyclones of Eastern View

The boy's closed out the season with much improvement and something to build on for next season. Improvement from the last match against Eastern View was noted in almost all the matches. The Cougars finished the season with a 2-12 (2-14) record

Cougars fall to Chargers in a close one!

A long and tough match saw Courtland come up a bit short falling to Chancellor 6-3. Three very close matches were Marcus winning in a tie breaker, Cole winning 10-8 and Dylan falling in a tie breaker!! Aaron played a good match for getting his first experience in the top six.
The other highlight of the day was Andrew defeating the once undefeated #1 of Chancellor. He was 7-0 until he played Andrew!! Now he's 7-1!!! We did all this with everyone except Andrew playing up a seed because Scott wasn't available to play. Job well done!!!

The Boy's played well as the cold temperatures and damp weather settled in. Dylan was the lone win in the singles matches and Andrew and Scott played tough matches against two of the districts better players. In doubles Cole and Dylan played an awesome match to defeate their opponent in a tie breaker 7-2!!

The Cougars put up a valent effort falling 5-4 to visiting Caroline. The final doubles match of the day was the deciding match in which Cole and Dylan fought until the end of the 11 - 9 match. The Courgars lost 7-2 to Chancellor but the score doesn't tell the story. Six of the nine matches were won by 3 games or less!!! This match could have went either way!! Scott and Marcus both won their singles matches.

The Cougars earned their first victory of the season by shutting out visiting Spotsylvania 9-0. Andrew, Scott, Marcus and Troy dominate their opponent either by shutting them out or only losing 1 game. Cole played a solid match to knock off his opponent 10-4 and Dylan played an up and down marathon match and finally pull it out 11-9. Great job guys!!!

Cougars fall to Massaponax in rain shortened match

The boy's fell 6-2 today against Massaponax High School as the rain shortened the match. Highlights were Andrew shutting out his opponent and Marcus getting his first varsity win in a marathon match that ended 11-9!

Cougars lose District opener to Culpeper

The boy's fell 6-3 today against Culpeper High School. Our next match will be Monday, March 21 against Massaponax at home. Practice tomorrow 3:00-5:30

Cougars fall to Non-District opponent

Riverbend defeated Courtland 9-0 in the Cougars first match of the season. This was a Non-District match and was a test to see where we are in the beginning of the season. They are a strong AAA school. We have some work to do but some good things came from the match that we will build on for our next one!!!

Change in schedule!!!

I was notified last night that the Thursday, March 17 match at Culpeper will now be a home match!!!! April 12 we will travel to Culpeper!!! Please make note of that on you schedules.

Reminder

Just a reminder that Monday we will have our first home match. It begins at 4:00 if your parents or friends want to watch (but you need to be there by 3:00) . Then at 7:00 there is an information night for you and your parents to hear about the tennis program and we will collect athletic fees. Please make sure your parents know!!!

Wear a white shirt Monday in case our shirts are not in.

First Week and a look ahead

The first week for tryouts (Feb. 21-25) came and went with the weather winning. One good day of practice on Wednesday plus the hour we were able to fit on the first day before the rains came were all we were able to get in. Snow and Ice on Tuesday, Rain on Thursday and winds on Friday prevented us from getting out on the courts. Hopefully this week will be better, at least the forecast is hopeful!!

Remember no practice Monday (plus severe weather looks like it will take hold). Practice Tuesday through Friday. We will practice Tuesday to prepare for the seeding tournament on Wednesday and Thursday. Everyone will play at least 3 one set matches against a teammate to determine the seeding to start the season. This will change as we go through the season but get's us started. Friday will focus on Doubles.

Pre Season Opportunity!!

Message from YMCA

Starting Feb.13th(Sunday), we will have a high school tennis
league at the YMCA indoor facility in Stafford, to help you get
ready for the upcoming season, it will be from noon-2:00pm,
it will be total of 3 Sundays!

There will be drills for the first half hour, then match
play(match formats may change due to amount of attendees) ,this
is a great opportunity for those of you who want to get ready for the
season, and for those of you trying out for the high school tennis for
the first time! We might also get a (current or past ) local high school
coach to talk about what they'd look for during try outs, to get you
more prepared!

the deadline will be next Fri.(11th), the cost will be $45.00 total.

Begining of Season information

Anyone interested in playing tennis this year are reminded that tryouts will be held on Monday, February 21 at the tennis courts promptly at 3:00 pm and will end at 5:30 pm. Please make sure your physical form is turned in or ready to be turned it.
