Tennis Opportunities

Listed below are a few tennis clinics at the YMCA Massad branch.  The first one begins tonight !!! So call if you are free this evening.  The number to call the YMCA tennis desk is 540.371.9622 ext 1044.  Just call to get your name on the list if you are interested in participating today or any Friday over the next 8 weeks. High School Drop-In - MA

Ages: 14-18 years. Drills and play for the high school player

going out for their high school team. Fridays 4:00 - 5:30 PM

8-week sessions begin: 11/2/12 & 1/4/13

Members: $10 / Non-Members: $12

High School Tournament - MA

Separate for male/female. No more than 2 matches in one

day. One 10 game set with a set tie-breaker at 10 all. Fri/

Due to the storm that rolled through around 2:15 Open Tennis is canceled for today.

Open Courts on Tuesday, September 4 from 3:15-5:00.  Please be sure to have your physical form turned in to Mr. Lowman and report to the Courtland Tennis Courts at 3:15. Hope to see you there!!

Open Tennis on July 26th cancelled!

We will not have open tennis on Thursday, July 26th.  There can be no open tennis once fall sports tryouts begin so anyone going out for a fall sport, GOOD LUCK!!!  Once we all get back in the swing of the school year we will have some more open court times.  Check back near the end of August as we start back up in September.  Enjoy the rest of your summer and have a great start to the school year!!!

Summer Tennis Opportunities

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer!!!  I would like to start having some open court days in July.  The first will be Thursday,  July 12 and again on Thursday, July 19 and Thursday, July 26. Times will be 6:30 - 8:00 at the Courtland courts.  PLEASE make sure you have your physical form completed and turned in to Mr. Lowman if you plan to attend.  I cannot allow you to participate unless you are on the list.

Andrew plays tough against Tabb's #1

Andrew met the Bay River's best singles player in the first round and played well.  Losing the first set 6-0, Andrew came back firing and had his serve working in the second set and moved out to a 5-2 lead in the second set.  Andrew fought to hold the lead and had a few set points but eventually fell 7-5 in the second set.

AWARDS BANQUET INFORMATION

The 2012 Spring Awards banquet is set for Wednesday, May 30 at 6:00pm in the Auditorium.  We ask that you bring a dessert to share.  See you then!!!

Andrew advances to Regional Tournament

Andrew defeated JM's #1 to advance to the Regional Tournament in Williamsburg on Monday, May 28.  Andrew won the first set 6-2 when his opponent had to stop due to an injury.  Andrew will play at Jamestown HS in Williamsburg at 10:00 am.

The Awards Banquet is set for Wednesday, May 30 @ 6:00 pm

Andrew falls to Chancellor's #1

Andrew played a tough match against Chancellor's #1 losing 6-4 6-2.  He will play JM's # 1 today.  With a win today he will secure a place in the Regional Tournament at Jamestown HS in Williamsburg on Monday, May 28 @ 10:00 am.

District Tournment

Andrew will compete tomorrow in the #1 singles tournament.  He will play the Chancellor #1 in the Semi-Finals.

Cougars season comes to a close

The Boy's lost to Culpeper on Friday, May 11 by a score of 6-3.  It was an extremely successful season as the  goal was to be competitive and show improvement.  Both were accomplished!!  Andrew will continue on as he will compete in the Singles District tournament on Wednesday, May 16 and Thursday, May 17 with a chance to move on to the Regional tournament.  Keep checking the blog to see how he does.

Cougars force District play-in match

The Boy's defeated Caroline 6-3 on Thursday by winning the first 5 singles matches to clinch the win.  They will play Culpeper on Friday at Riverbend HS at 4:30.  They finished the regular season with a 7-7 District record and 7-9 overall with a chance to play in the District tournament next week.

The Cougars improved to (6-9)(6-7) by defeating King George on Monday 8-1.

Cougars fall to JM

The Cougars fell 8-1 to James Monroe on Thursday, May 3.  Andrew won the only match of the day.  A 10-4 victory at #1 to qualify for the District tournament the week of May 14.  As it looks now the boy's need to win their final two matches to force a play-in match to qualify for the District tournament on May 14.  Andrew will play singles on May 16 and 17 at James Monroe HS.

The Cougars (5-8)(5-6) lost to Eastern View on Wednesday 7-2.  Andrew avenged last years loss to the 2011 District Champion with an 8-5 victory and Troy and Dylan added a Doubles victory.

Courtland falls to Chancellor

The Boys lost to Chancellor 7-2 but played much better than they did the first time they played this season!! They are now 5-7 on the season and 5-5 in the District.  Marcus and Miguel both won and Andrew and Hunter played very close singles matches.

Friday Practice results

The #1 doubles team of Andrew and Marcus fell to the undefeated team of Coach Williams and Coach Malobicky 10 - 8 on Friday.  Andrew and Marcus came out to play opening up a 5-1 lead but the Coaches stormed back to win 8 straight games to make it 9-5.  Marcus and Andrew held on and made it close by winning the next 3 games to close the gap to 9-8 but the coaches experience paid off in the final game that decide the match.

Eastern View update

We will not leave until 4:00 next Wednesday, May 2 due to busing so I will meet you in the Commons around 3:00 and we will wait for the bus.  If you plan to go home be sure to be back at Courtland no later than 3:45!!!  It will be a late night so we will stop to get something to eat on the way home.  Remember we will be going to JM the next day for another away match so it will be a busy 2 days.

Eastern View Match Postponed!!

Cougars above 500 in District play!!

A cold and wet day on the courts could not slow the Cougars down as they swept the Knights 9-0.  They improved to 5-4 in the District and 5-6 overall.

Cougars keep District Playoff hopes alive!!!

The boy's won an exciting match against Culpeper 5-4. With newcomers to the top 6, Dylan and Austin won the only singles matches! The doubles teams swept Culpeper to secure the win!!! They evened up their district record at 4-4.

Cougars return from break with a win!

Cougars (3-6)(3-4) defeated Caroline on Thursday 5-4.

The Boy's won a close and exciting match against Caroline 5-4 on Monday, April 16 as we honored the only Senior; Andrew. After splitting singles 3-3 in which Andrew, Marcus and Miguel all won they went into doubles needing 2 of 3 matches. After two very close doubles matches ended the team of Andrew and Marcus won and the match was again tied at 4-4. Cole and Troy won the deciding match of the day in dramatic fashion with a 7-4 tiebreaker win to seal the victory for the Cougars.

We will travel to Culpeper on Thursday, April 19.

The boy's lost to a consistent Powhatan team 8-1. Their record is now (1-3)(1-2). With the loss the boy's played well, many long ralleys and aggressive points. Improvement was seen in all matches!

Good tennis during FA scrimmage

They Boy's played well shorthanded against a young FA squad. Marcus was unable to play and Andrew did not compete in doubles. That moved everyone up a line which gave them a more competitive match which allowed them to work on their game. Andrew was the only win of the day. Cole took his match into a tiebreaker but eventually fell 11-10 (8-6) and Hudson playing in his first match lost a very tight match 11-9. In doubles Hudson and Lyle were close to victory when the match was called.

The Boy's cruised to a 9-0 win over Spotsylvania on Thursday to even their record at 1-1. They will scrimmage Fredericksburg Academy on Friday and host Eastern View on Monday.

High School Tennis Social

I wanted to let everyone know that they are having a high school tennis social this Friday (March 9) from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the YMCA in Stafford. Fees are $10 for Y members and $12 for non Y members. Pizza and soft drinks provided. Good opportunity to get in some practice and make some tennis contacts.

Remember to keep an eye on the weather, get your concussion form filled out to report to the computer lab on Thursday @ 3:00 and WE WILL practice Thursday after the concussion test.

Open Courts Feb. 1

Let's take advantage of the weather!!! On Wednesday, Feb. 1 there will be open courts from 3:00 - 5:00. Make sure your physical forms are completed and turned in to Mr. Lowman.

Tryout Information

It's almost here!!! We will hold team tryouts Feb. 21 through Feb. 24 from 3:00 - 5:30. Announcements will be made in the next few weeks. See you in a few weeks!!

Tennis Drop In Drills at the Y in Stafford

Tennis Pro Bob Calloway from the Stafford YMCA is hosting "tennis teen drop in drills" held on Mon., Tue., Wed. from 5:30 to 6:30; drop-in 4:00-5:30 on Fridays; and a drill clinic class on Tue. & Thur. 4:00-5:00 pm. The season is just around the corner and indoor practice now will pay benefits when you go outside! Hope you are able to take advantage!!

Below is the 2012 match schedule. All matches begin at approximately 4:00 PM with the Powhatan match as the exception due to longer travel time. It will begin at approximately 4:30. Tryouts will begin the week of February 20. More information to come!! Updates in red.
